Non-Surgical Orthopedic

Pain relief as quickly as possible

Our multidisciplinary team care approach includes licensed therapists who ensure you receive the therapy and rehabilitation program that helps you get back to your active lifestyle. Our physical therapists take a holistic approach to ensure your entire body is moving correctly to support your condition’s repair and recovery.

Topical or Oral Medications

Topical medications are best for local absorption since the ointment is applied directly to a particular skin area. Interestingly, some can affect the whole body once absorbed through the skin. Topical medications come in the form of creams, ointments, lotions, gels, foams, patches, powders, and pastes. These treat pain or other concerns in specific parts of the body.

Oral medications like tablets, liquids, and gel caps are the most common route to administer medicines. On average, Americans take 4 prescription pills each day, and there are many over-the-counter options for minor aches and pains.

With both oral and topical medications, the goal is to give relief as quickly as possible.

Platelet Rich Plasma

TAfter being prepared, the fat or bone marrow cells used in regenerative orthopedic medicine are delivered into the patient together with platelet-rich plasma. To prepare platelet-rich plasma, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, where it is spun at high speed for about 40 minutes to separate the cells and proteins that induce healing from the other components of the blood. This resulting liquid containing platelets and growth factors is platelet-rich plasma.

The desired result of PRP therapy is to allow the injured area to bear greater stress during activity without pain. When PRP is injected into the damaged area, it stimulates the tendon, ligament, joint, and cartilage, causing mild inflammation that triggers the healing process. As a result, new collagen begins to develop. As this collagen matures, it begins to shrink and causes the tightening and strengthening of the tendons or ligaments of the damaged area.

Physical Therapy

One of the most prevalent forms of non-surgical orthopedics is physical therapy and rehabilitation. In this treatment, mobility is slowly regained by gradually strengthening muscles and joints around the injured area. Some examples of conditions where physical therapy might be prescribed include:

  • Sprains
  • Strains
  • Scoliosis
  • Fractures
  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections can be used to reduce swelling, pain, or stiffness. Platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow concentrate therapies are newer treatments with promising results for tendons and arthritis. Like platelet-rich plasma, whole blood can be used to treat tendon injuries.

There are several factors to consider when recommending treatment for chronic pain. Most patients can receive a steroid injection to treat joint pain, including teenage athletes, active adults, and those who have degenerative conditions.

SoftWave TRT

Healing begins one softwave at a time. SoftWave TRT uses patented technology to reach an injured area at the cellular level to successfully turn on the body's natural healing process.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a revolutionary way for your body to utilize its own cells to heal itself and to alleviate pain. Here at Keep Active Health & Wellness in Fredericksburg, Virginia, we frequently treat our patients who have arthritis and joint injuries with PRP therapy and stem cell therapy, and many of them have rebounded from pain and movement issues with a renewed vigor.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Minimally invasive surgery refers to any surgical procedure that is performed through tiny incisions instead of a large opening. The smaller incisions allow the patient to have a quicker recovery time and less pain than a traditional open surgery with the same benefits as traditional surgery.

In orthopedics, this can mean the difference between exposing the entire joint through a large, open incision and using small, targeted incisions to address only the problem area. This results in less risk during surgery, less post-operative pain and shorter recovery times.

What Procedure Is Right For You?

For many orthopedic injuries and conditions, non-surgical treatment options and traditional surgery are still the preferred methods of treatment. Our physicians are trained in the full spectrum of treatment options and will help guide you to the best treatment for your individual needs.

These treatments can restore proper movement, strengthen muscles and joints, and increase range of motion without surgery. We will help you decide on the optimal care path for your orthopedic condition to achieve your personal health goals and get you back on your feet.
